Released in 1975, this is a solo piano album by American pianist Andrew Hill, who recorded a series of masterpieces for Blue Note from the mid-1960s through the early 1970s.
A Japan-only release, the album was produced under the supervision of legendary promoter Toshinari Koinuma, known for bringing numerous jazz musicians to Japan for performances. It was recorded the same year at Vanguard Studio in New York. Hill’s playing here is simply outstanding, weaving beautiful, delicate, yet highly energetic melodies in an improvisational flow guided by pure emotion. His rendition of the Duke Ellington jazz classic on A4 is also deeply moving. Although Hill was not fully appreciated in the United States during the 1970s, it is truly meaningful that so many exceptional works emerged from Japan, where his brilliance was clearly understood.
