Since her debut in the early 1970s, Brooklyn-born musician Annette Peacock has produced numerous groundbreaking works filled with originality. This album, released in 1986 on her own label, Ironic, is a self-produced project in which Peacock herself handled all aspects of songwriting, arrangement, and programming—except for percussion, which features Roger Turner, a drummer known for his collaborations with John Russell and Derek Bailey. The result is a highly significant work in which Peacock’s unique sonic world is fully realized: her cynical and poetic vocals weave through chamber music-like backdrops, creating an otherworldly atmosphere. This distinctive approach would later evolve into the 2000 ECM release An Acrobat’s Heart. Highly, highly recommended.
