A brilliant saxophonist who, alongside John Coltrane and Cecil Taylor, created numerous masterpieces rooted in African heritage, Archie Shepp released this album in 1967 on the German label SABA. It features a recording of his performance at the Donaueschingen Music Festival in Germany in October of that year, as part of a quintet with Roswell Rudd (trombone), Grachan Moncur III (trombone), Jimmy Garrison (bass), and Beaver Harris (drums). The powerful session, which runs over 40 minutes, is a heartfelt tribute to his close friend John Coltrane, who had passed away just three months before the festival. Every moment of this performance is imbued with soul. The album saw its first U.S. release in 1972.
