An American pianist with a background in modern classical music, including influences from Bartók and Stockhausen, yet known for pursuing intensely physical expression within the field of jazz, Cecil Taylor released this album in 1972. Performed by a bassless quartet featuring Jimmy Lyons (alto sax), Sam Rivers (tenor and soprano sax), and Andrew Cyrille (drums), the album captures the second volume of a live recording from the Nuits de la Fondation Maeght festival held in July 1969 in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, France. A flood-like stream of interplay unfolds with uncanny synchronicity in this improvised session, which—despite its complexity—never feels overly obscure. This is the original French pressing.
