An obscure gem has just arrived. Belgian keyboardist Charles Loos—known for his work with the fusion group Abraxis, the new wave band Cos, and his 1986 trio album HLM with Steve Houben and Claude Maurane (also featured in the guidebook OBSCURE SOUND REVISED EDITION)—teamed up with American flutist Ali Ryerson, a classically and jazz-trained musician who rose to prominence in the 1980s, for this 1989 release. The quintet also features Philippe Aerts (b), Jan De Haas (ds), and Arnold Massart (synth). The opening track, A1, was recorded in a New York studio with Michael Formanek (b) and Felix Simtaine (ds). Throughout the album, they deliver refined urban contemporary jazz, where Ryerson’s flute melodies float gracefully in a tranquil ambience balanced by Loos’s restrained piano. The soundscapes bear a strong kinship to the Nordic school of ECM.
