Chick Corea
Children’s Songs
ECM Records/Polydor (Japan) 1984
25MJ 3370 (LP) w/insert.
sleeve : NM-
media : EX+/EX+(some slightly noise.)
Discovered by Miles Davis and featured on landmark albums such as In a Silent Way, Bitches Brew, and On the Corner, jazz pianist Chick Corea also sparked a major fusion boom with his own 1972 leader album Return to Forever. This 1984 solo piano album, released on ECM, is a true masterpiece. The work consists of twenty short pieces, beginning with the first chapter composed a year before Return to Forever and completed twelve years later in 1983 with the final section. Filled with beautiful melodies that evoke a wide range of inner landscapes, the album is remarkable not only for the expressive quality of Corea’s performance but also for the sheer brilliance of the compositions—transcending the label of “jazz.” It rewards close, attentive listening, yet also functions perfectly as background music, blending seamlessly into the space like “furniture music.” The Japanese pressing from this Polydor-distributed ECM period also offers excellent sound quality.
