A 1972 recording for CTI by the great trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, whose brilliant tone helped define post-hard bop modern jazz through his classic Blue Note albums of the 1960s, as well as his work with Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers, John Coltrane and Ornette Coleman. The album features Keith Jarrett, George Benson, Ron Carter, Billy Cobham, Hubert Laws, Ray Barretto and Airto Moreira, with arrangements and conducting by Don Sebesky. On the extended opening track A1, Hubbard’s full-bodied trumpet cuts through the dense rhythms and horn arrangements with striking clarity, while Jarrett’s electric piano, Benson’s guitar and Cobham’s drums create a supple, flowing groove. A2 unfolds with a dreamlike harmonic atmosphere, while B1, Nino Rota’s theme from The Godfather, transforms its cinematic shadows into a distinctly CTI-style jazz ensemble piece. Through to the closing title track B2, the album captures Hubbard’s sound in a powerful blend of momentum and urbane afterglow. This is the limited edition released by King Records in 1978 as part of the CTI Original 1500 Series.
