Gary Burton, Chick Corea
Crystal Silence
ECM Records/Trio Records (Japan) 1973
PA-7074 (LP) w/insert.
sleeve : EX-(collapseon two corners, light dirts.)
media : EX/EX(some slightly noise.)
A duo album released in 1973 by American vibraphonist Gary Burton and, needless to say, one of the leading pianists in the US jazz scene, Chick Corea. Recorded in Oslo in 1972. In addition to Corea’s own compositions, the album features pieces by Steve Swallow and Mike Gibbs, creating an endlessly beautiful sonic universe through vibraphone and piano. The true highlight is tracks B1 and B5, arrangements for vibes and piano of pieces from the eternal masterpiece Return to Forever—a work I also introduced as a masterwork in the guidebook obscure sound: The Arcadian Record 640 Selection. These tracks present a completely different sound world from Return to Forever. You could say the two works stand as equals. It’s impossible not to feel a sense of Corea’s romanticism emanating throughout.
A1: Senor Mouse
B5: What Game Shall We Play Today
