Released on ECM in 1982, this album as a leader is by American bassist Gary Peacock. The quartet features ECM regulars Jan Garbarek on tenor and soprano saxophones and Jack DeJohnette on drums, joined by Tomasz Stańko, one of the leading figures of Polish jazz, on trumpet. A1 creates a profoundly spiritual space through the combination of Stańko’s unmistakably distorted, highly individual trumpet lines and Peacock’s bass resonating through the silence. On B3, Garbarek and Stańko’s experimental horns intertwine with DeJohnette’s spacious drumming. Throughout the album, the musicians breathe as one while maintaining an almost palpable tension within the taut atmosphere, producing performances so intense that they leave the listener holding their breath. Especially remarkable is the interplay between Garbarek and Stańko, two musicians with such distinctive sonic identities—the way their unique tones collide and intertwine is simply superb. Original German pressing.
