Released on ECM in 1974, this album features a quartet led by Norwegian saxophonist Jan Garbarek, continuing his journey of inner exploration, and renowned Swedish pianist Bobo Stenson, with Palle Danielsson on bass and Jon Christensen on drums. The undeniable highlight is B2, a remarkable performance lasting more than twenty minutes that interprets Don Cherry’s masterpiece “Desireless,” originally featured on Organic Music Society. The profound message of the composition is deepened further by Garbarek’s uncompromising spirituality, resulting in exceptionally deep spiritual jazz. Garbarek’s endlessly expansive saxophone and Stenson’s piano are superb, as are Danielsson’s bass and Christensen’s drums. For some reason, the performance brings John Coltrane to mind as it unfolds. The quartet’s more aggressive interpretations of compositions by Carla Bley and Jim Pepper are equally excellent. German pressing issued from mid-1976 onward, with laminated sleeve and label code. The stampers are identical to those used for the original pressing.
