The fourth installment in The Mastery of John Coltrane series, released by ABC Impulse! between 1978 and 1979. Tracks A1 to C2 feature live recordings from November 1–3, 1961, at the legendary New York jazz club The Village Vanguard, with Coltrane supported by McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison, and Elvin Jones, along with Eric Dolphy and Roy Haynes. Tracks D1 and D2 were recorded in May 1961 at Van Gelder Studio in New Jersey, featuring Roy Haynes, Charles Majid Greenlee, Julian Priester, Donald Corrado, Jimmy Buffington, Julius Watkins, Robert Swisshel, Garvin Bushell, Pat Patrick, Booker Little, and Freddie Hubbard. Notable highlights include B2, an English folk song arranged in a style reminiscent of My Favorite Things, which also appeared on the same year’s masterpiece Africa/Brass, and D1, a powerful ensemble rendition of the album’s opening track. This release captures Coltrane at one of the most prolific and inspired periods of his career.
