Released in 1986, this album is by American bassist Michael Manring, also known as a member of Darol Anger’s group Montreux. Produced by Bob Read, who also performs on the album, it features contributions from Steve Bloom, Bruce Martin, Kurt Wortman, and others. With fretless bass, vocals, saxophone, clarinet, flute, piano, percussion, and synthesizer, the album creates an ethereal set of sonic landscapes and finely shaded musical scenery. Among the many releases on Windham Hill, this stands alongside Michael Hedges’ work as one of the label’s particularly high-quality recordings. A beautiful album of new age-inflected contemporary jazz that will also appeal to fans of the Pat Metheny Group. Recommended.
