This 1984 album by oud player Rabih Abou-Khalil, originally from Beirut, Lebanon, and active in Germany, was featured with two works in the guidebook OBSCURE SOUND REVISED EDITION. The album features an unconventional quartet lineup with Michael Armann (p, vo), Jonathan Brock (perc, vo), and Shankar Lal (tabla). Highlights include A1, a long-form piece exceeding 17 minutes, which begins with a slow, mysterious oud introduction before tabla and cymbals create a deep, spacious atmosphere, expressing a dynamic interplay of light and shadow. B1showcases a stunning exchange between Abou-Khalil’s flute and Armann’s acoustic piano. Compared to his other works, the traditional influences here are somewhat subdued, but the beautifully crafted ensemble creates a profoundly immersive and lyrical ethnic jazz experience. An absolutely essential listen.
A1: Bitter Harvest (Requiem II)
B1: Machghara
