This is a 1994 leader album by oud player Rabih Abou-Khalil, originally from Beirut, Lebanon and active in Germany, who also left behind the masterpiece Nafas on ECM. The album features musicians active on jazz labels such as ECM and CMP, including Kenny Wheeler (trumpet, flugelhorn), Charlie Mariano (alto saxophone), Steve Swallow (bass), and Mark Nauseef (drums). Also participating are Milton Cardona (percussion), known for his work on Kip Hanrahan’s label American Clave, and Lebanese frame drum player Nabil Khaiat. A progressive form of ethnic jazz unfolds, where ethnic phrases rooted in Indian classical music intertwine with contemporary jazz. The gold-printed jacket is also beautifully designed. This is a limited edition audiophile pressing and includes a booklet containing sheet music for each oud piece.
