A very obscure piece has just arrived. This is the first and only analog release from Stephan Kurmann Strings, led by Swiss bassist Stephan Kurmann, who has performed with numerous jazz musicians, including Chet Baker, Mal Waldron, Lee Konitz, and Steve Grossman, and is now active in Brazil. This intriguing work combines chamber music and jazz, featuring a string quartet with violin, viola, and cello, joined by Doug Hammond on drums and Andy Scherrer on saxophone. Alongside Kurmann’s original scores, it includes covers of tracks like McCoy Tyner’s “Aisha” and George Russell’s “Ezz-thetic.” It’s a remarkable performance, like Kronos Quartet meeting spiritual jazz. Highly recommended.
