Since the early 1960s, he had been active as a leading figure of post-bop, and from the late 1970s onward, he released many celebrated works on Denmark’s StapleChase label, including collaborations with Sun Ra. This is the 1977 leader album by American vibraphonist Walt Dickerson. It features a trio with Rudy McDaniels (better known as Jamaladeen Takuma) on bass and Edgar Bateman on drums, recorded live at a 1976 concert at Players Palace in his hometown of Philadelphia. Opening with A1, a vibraphone solo by Dickerson that unfolds delicate melodies while releasing shimmering overtones, the performance flows into A2, which begins with a bass solo by McDaniels and develops into free-form interplay. The album captures the brilliance of Dickerson’s unparalleled vibraphone artistry to the fullest. Even environmental sounds such as dogs barking and people talking can be vividly heard. A highly recommended record.
