This title was featured in the first edition of the guidebook Obscure Sound. Released in 1985 on an independent label, this album is by Japanese electronic wave outfit 4-D Mode-1, comprised of Kenji Konishi—formerly of progressive rock band Dada and later a member of P-Model—Shinobu Narita of Urban Dance, the group that made its major debut on Yen Records under Yukihiro Takahashi’s production, and multi-instrumentalist Michihiro Yokokawa, also known for his work with After Dinner and P-Model. A remarkably sharp and forward-thinking work, it showcases a superb balance of tight, hard-edged electronics and a refined new wave sensibility. Highlights include the outstanding A2, driven by crisp electro breakbeats and laced with witty arrangement touches, as well as the live take A3, whose propulsive feel recalls the body music of acts such as Front 242. The artwork is also exceptionally strong. Highly recommended.
