This album was featured in the guidebook OBSCURE SOUND REVISED EDITION. It is a brilliant 1989 tribute album in which 12 Brazilian artists from the country’s strange/post-rock scene cover compositions previously created by Arnaldo Baptista—a composer, keyboardist, and bassist from São Paulo who was a founding member of the psychedelic rock band Os Mutantes, alongside Rita Lee and Sérgio Dias, and a central figure in the 1960s Tropicália movement together with Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa, and Maria Bethânia. Right from the opening track, A1 by Sexo Explícito, the album delivers a thrilling ride: a rhythm driven by spaciously mixed kick drums and low toms, fat bass lines, and electric guitars enhanced with reverse cymbal effects that float in the mix. The record also features 3 Hombres’ atmospheric, straightforward band-style cover of an Os Mutantes-era song on A2, and Fellini’s experimental acoustic wave piece on B3—reflecting the creative energy of Brazil’s 1980s rock scene. Among the many highlights, B5 by Skowa—a tight, crazy mix of rock and hip-hop—is particularly recommended.
A1: Sexo Eplicito "o sol"
B3: Felini “Ce ta pensando que eu sou loki?”
B5: Skowa "e facil"
