An outstanding album released in 1968 by American saxophonist Albert Ayler, known as a pioneer of avant-garde jazz in 1960s New York. This superb work features a powerful quartet with Donald Ayler (trumpet), Call Cobbs (harpsichord), Alan Silva (bass), and Milford Graves (drums). The title track, A1, opens with Ayler's resounding scat singing, while A5/B1 showcases the perfect match between Ayler's tenor sax and Cobbs' harpsichord, creating an adult, sophisticated atmosphere. Throughout the album, Ayler's spiritual jazz masterpiece incorporates elements of black spirituals and marches, crafting an intense and emotional soundscape. Graves' drumming is, as always, remarkable. Highly recommended. This is a reissue of the domestic release from 1972.
