An album released in 1982 featuring a live recording from a 1966 concert by American saxophonist Albert Ayler, who rose to prominence in 1960s New York as one of the leading figures of avant-garde jazz. Performing here as a quintet with Donald Ayler (trumpet), Michel Sampson (violin), Lewis Worrell (bass), and Ron Jackson (percussion), Ayler delivers extended live renditions—over 41 minutes in total—of his signature pieces “Bells,” first released on ESP-Disk’ the previous year, and “Ghosts,” later included on his 1968 Impulse! masterpiece Love Cry. The A-side “Bells” is truly outstanding, beginning with a deeply affectionate nod to New Orleans jazz and marching band traditions before erupting into a torrent of fiery improvisation.
