This is the 1984 release of the first leader album by pianist Allen Youngblood, born in the United States Virgin Islands. Despite being a relatively minor artist, he gathered a sextet of accomplished musicians including Julian Priester (trombone), Gary Peacock (bass), Hadley Caliman (tenor sax), Denney Goodshew (bass clarinet, piccolo, alto sax, flute), and Jerry Granelli (drums) for this album. The work showcases straight-ahead post-bop and avant-garde jazz. The delightful A3 features a light touch incorporating Latin/Caribbean flavors, while the title track B1, with its delicate interplay between piano and bass, is particularly recommended.
A3: The Straight and Narrow
