An album released in 1983 by American pianist Anthony Davis, a member of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) from Chicago, USA, who has frequently collaborated with other artists from the organization, including Chico Freeman and George Lewis. The album features a large number of AACM musicians, including Dwight Andrews (flute, piccolo, clarinet, soprano sax), J.D. Parran (clarinet, bass clarinet), Leo Smith (trumpet, percussion), George Lewis (trombone), and David Samuels (vibraphone, marimba). It’s a suite consisting of five movements themed around the history of African people who, despite being forcibly taken to the New World as slaves, survived. With an incredibly dramatic progression, it’s like watching a visionary free jazz orchestra that feels as if you’re viewing a movie or documentary film. It’s amazing.
