An album released in 1977 by the brilliant saxophonist Archie Shepp, who, alongside John Coltrane and Cecil Taylor, produced numerous masterpieces of African-rooted jazz. Featuring American singer Joe Lee Wilson—who left behind the acclaimed album Shout for Trane released in 1976 on Whynot, and also delivered a stunning vocal performance on Charles Greenlee’s 1977 masterpiece I Know about the Life released on Baystate—this work focuses on the blues. The quartet includes Siegfried Kessler (piano), Cameron Brown (bass), and Clifford Jarvis (drums). Opening with the standard number on A1, said to be the origin of the blues progression, the album offers an abundance of sensual and supreme performances throughout, including tracks like A3—previously featured on Shepp's 1970 release For Losers and Wilson's 1975 work—as well as Shepp’s original compositions. A truly outstanding record.
