Hungarian guitar master Attila Zoller—widely acknowledged as a major influence on Pat Metheny—and leading Japanese jazz pianist Masahiko Sato come together on this album, recorded in Berlin in 1971. Originally slated to appear as a quartet with Yasuo Arakawa (b) and Masahiko Ozu (ds) at the Berlin Jazz Festival, the group’s engagement was cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances; these studio recordings document the session that followed. Within the tense framework of free improvisation, flashes of Sato’s characteristically lyrical lines emerge with striking clarity. Of particular note is the title track B2, highly recommended for its driving energy—akin to the adventurous jazz-rock directions pursued by contemporaries such as Mal Waldron on The Call and Wolfgang Dauner with Et Cetera. This is the 1975 Japanese pressing issued in Teichiku’s “MPS Masterpiece Series.”
