The first female instrumentalist ever signed to Blue Note Records, American flautist Bobbi Humphrey recorded a total of twelve albums over her career. This is her debut leader album, released in 1971 on Blue Note, and it already speaks volumes about the label’s confidence in her vision. The lineup is stacked with serious talent: Lee Morgan (tp), Billy Harper (ts), Hank Jones (p), Frank Owens (p), George Duvivier (b), Gene Bertoncini (g), George Devens (per), Gordon Edwards (b), Idris Muhammad (ds), Jimmy Johnson (ds), and Ray Armando (per). Drawing on contemporary pop and R&B hits of the day, the album delivers light-footed, groove-rich arrangements played with ease and confidence. Humphrey was just 21 years old at the time, and this record clearly reflects how much Blue Note was betting on her future. A classy, joyful listen. This edition is the 2014 SHM-CD reissue from Blue Note’s 75th Anniversary The Masterworks series, newly remastered at 192kHz/24bit and fully compatible with all standard CD players. Highly recommended.
