Beginning his full-fledged performing career in the early 1950s, American vibraphonist Cal Tjader—who left behind numerous masterpieces infused with Latin flavor—released this album in 1981. It features a quintet with Scott Hamilton(ts), Hank Jones (p), Vince Lateano (ds), and Dean Reilly (b). The album is devoted entirely to the score by American composer and arranger Johnny Mandel, who wrote the music for the 1965 drama film The Sandpiper, whose theme “The Shadow of Your Smile” became a well-known standard. From bossa-tinged pieces to elegant mood-style tracks, the album consistently presents refined arrangements and mature performances. A perfect record to enjoy slowly on a pleasant afternoon.
