An album released by American pianist Carla Bley and Canadian poet Paul Haines on the label of The Jazz Composer’s Orchestra Association Inc., an organization founded by Bley and Michael Mantler in 1971. This jazz-rock opera was completed after five years of planning by Bley and an additional three years of recording. Musicians and vocalists from across countless genres—Don Cherry, Gato Barbieri, Charlie Haden, Paul Motian, Mike Mantler, Jack Bruce, Karl Berger, Linda Ronstadt, and many others—come together in a chaotic whirlwind where music from the 1930s, folk, country, psychedelic rock, Indian music, and even electronic sound all swirl like a melting pot. It’s practically the Pink Floyd of the jazz world. A truly immersive listen. This is the 1974 UK pressing.
