A 1984 album by The Harmonic Choir, a group founded in 1975 by New Mexico-based composer and meditation guide David Hykes, one of the foremost practitioners of overtone singing. A1 was recorded live that same year at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York, while A2 and the entire B-side were recorded at St. Paul’s Chapel at Columbia University. Like Hearing Solar Winds, released on the renowned French traditional music label Ocora, the album builds a profoundly immersive sound world through layers of overtone-rich voices, drawing on techniques related to Mongolian khöömei and Tibetan Buddhist overtone chanting. An astonishing work in which the human voice alone creates an almost unfathomably deep and resonant sonic space.
