American saxophonist David Murray, known for his distinctive presence in numerous sessions since the mid-1970s, released this album in 1978 on the Italian jazz label Black Saint. The lineup features a quartet with Lawrence "Butch" Morris (cornet), Johnny Dyani (bass), and Oliver Johnson (drums), joined by vocalist Maria Contreras. The album is filled with dark, intense sounds throughout, including the powerful, note-dense spiritual jazz of track A1, showcasing Murray’s signature forceful interplay at its finest. However, the real shock comes with track B2—a bossa-flavored Latin jazz piece where every instrument, including Contreras’s vocals, proceeds completely out of key, creating a uniquely disorienting and fascinating experience.
