Released in 1997, this album documents a set of truly rare live recordings made during Don Cherry’s time in Sweden from the late 1960s through the 1970s—a crucial period in his creative evolution. The opening track was recorded in 1968 at ABF House, the central hub of Sweden’s largest non-governmental adult education association. Tracks 2 and 5 were captured at Filmstaden Sergel in central Stockholm, track 3 at the Moderna Museet, and track 4 during an extraordinary performance held aboard a frigate. Alongside Cherry are leading Swedish jazz musicians such as Bernt Rosengren, Torbjörn Hultcrantz, Leif Wennerström, and Tommy Koverhult, joined by Turkey-born trumpeter Maffy Falay, who was also active on the Nordic scene. What unfolds is Cherry at his absolute best: borderless, deeply human, and rich with multi-ethnic spirit—an inspired blend of ethno-inflected free jazz that feels untethered to any single nation or tradition. Every track here is outstanding. Highly recommended.
