Originally rooted in hard bop before moving boldly into modal jazz and soul jazz, Donald Byrd continued his relentless pursuit of new sounds with this outstanding 1969 release. The lineup is absolutely bulletproof, featuring Lew Tabackin (flute), Julian Priester (trombone), and Duke Pearson (electric piano), among others. From the opening of A1, where Tabackin’s beautiful, floating flute dances over a light, easy groove before giving way to inspired solos by Byrd and Priester, to the deep soul-jazz burners on B1 and B2 with Pearson’s electric piano intertwining perfectly with the horn section, this is a timeless, groove-laden jazz masterpiece that still shines decades on. This edition is the 2014 SHM-CD release from Blue Note’s 75th Anniversary The Masterworks series, newly remastered at 192kHz/24bit. Fully compatible with all CD players. An essential title.
