A masterpiece album released in 1973 by South African alto saxophonist Dudu Pukwana, who showcased his talent as a leading figure of Cape Jazz and as a member of the Afro-jazz rock band Assagai. South African trumpeter Mongezi Feza also participates. Side A opens with an exhilarating track where a horn section blows over a fast Afro-beat with vibrant Afro-chants (A1), followed by an Afro-jazz piece (A2) built on percussive rhythms and looping funky phrases. The album is packed with a primal sound in which African music and the jazz culture of New Orleans—rooted in shared traditions—are organically fused once again. It’s the kind of music that makes your body move without thinking. This is the 1983 reissue released on Earthworks, a label under Virgin Records.
