This is a 1982 leader album by American drummer Elvin Jones, who rose to prominence in the late 1940s on the Detroit jazz scene and showcased his skills on numerous historic albums as the backbone of John Coltrane's band from the mid-1950s onwards. Reggie Workman (b), Kenny Kirkland (p), and Pat LaBarbera (ts) participate in this quartet. With Latin-flavored drums driving modal runs on A1 and emotionally charged saxophone from LaBarbera and elegant piano from Kirkland on standout spiritual jazz tracks like A2/B3, the album presents exquisite performances that inherit the design of John Coltrane while elevating them into contemporary territory. The combination with Workman, a close ally who also worked with Coltrane in the Coltrane Quintet, is flawless. It's outstanding.
