An album released in 1966 by American reed player Eric Dolphy, who was active on the front lines from the late 1940s and is also known as a pioneer in using the bass clarinet as a lead instrument in jazz. This compilation consists of live recordings from The Five Spot in 1961 (Side A) and studio recordings by Rudy Van Gelder in 1960 (Side B), with Don't Blame Me (B2) being an alternate take from a European recording. Side A features a quintet with Booker Little (tp), Mal Waldron (p), Richard Davis (b), and Eddie Blackwell (ds), delivering a tense performance that moves between hard bop and free jazz. Side B includes a quartet with Jaki Byard (p), George Tucker (b), and Roy Haynes (ds) on B1, while B2 showcases Dolphy’s brilliant flute playing alongside Bent Axen (p), Erik Moseholm (b), and Jorn Elniff (ds).
