Beginning with Peter Giger's solo work released in 1975, the group Family of Percussion left behind a series of acclaimed recordings featuring artists such as Wolfgang Dauner, Albert Mangelsdorff, and Alan Skidmore. This particular album, released in 1981, features American saxophonist Archie Shepp as a guest. Centered around Giger, the lineup also includes percussionists Trilok Gurtu, Doug Hammond, and Tom Nicholas. The album showcases a refined blend of pure percussion sound and groove, offering a full display of ethno-avant-jazz. Standout tracks include A1, with its mid-tempo groove evocative of New York City streets, and A3, a spiritual piece featuring floating flutes and a variety of percussions including steel pans. Another highlight is the deeply moving spiritual jazz track B2, enriched by Shepp’s heartfelt poetry. This is a truly remarkable work — highly recommended.

A1: Here Comes The Family
A2: Street Song
A3: Euterpe’s Favorit
B1: Ardopetotri
B2: For Ti Roro
