A quartet that left behind only two albums on ECM in the 80s, First House released their debut album in 1986. The members, Ken Stubbs (alto and soprano sax), Django Bates (piano), Mick Hutton (bass), and Martin France (drums and percussion), were still emerging young musicians at the time. However, they caught the attention of Manfred Eicher, and were fortunate enough to record with ECM. While there are elements of free improvisation, the album also features dynamic developments and delicate soundscapes, making it a wonderful piece of work. The recording, done by Jan Erik Kongshaug at Oslo’s Rainbow Studio, is also superb. The album truly transcends into the ECM world. This is an original German pressing and a rare find.
