Dutch jazz flutist Chris Hinze—renowned for his many beautiful, intoxicating works ranging from ethnically infused new age jazz to meditative pieces—released this album in 1974 as the third installment of his Super Session series, following Kyorai and Kaiden, once again collaborating with masters of traditional Japanese music. This recording features sessions with gagaku musicians Shiba Sukeyasu (ryūteki, yokobue), Bunno Hideaki (shō), and Okubo Nagao (hichiriki). In addition to various flutes and piccolo, Hinze also performs on the Indian bamboo flute. Opening with a bass flute solo, the album flows into “Hyojō no Netori” as a prologue to gagaku, and then transitions into an original composition by Hinze. A rare and captivating fusion of jazz flute and gagaku, this is a standout oriental ethno-jazz masterpiece.
