This is a leader album released in 1980 by the American jazz drummer/pianist Jack DeJohnette, who has been active since the 1960s, participating in numerous sessions and showcasing remarkable drumming on many ECM records, including those with Dave Holland, Gary Burton, Keith Jarrett, Kenny Werner, and Richie Beirach. The album features a quartet with David Murray on tenor saxophone and bass clarinet, Arthur Blythe on alto saxophone, and Peter Warren on bass and cello. Except for two tracks on side B covering John Coltrane's compositions, all compositions are by DeJohnette himself. While there are some quite free-leaning compositions, the depth and spatial positioning of each part scattered throughout the soundstage are immensely striking, creating an intense sense of presence as if the performance is unfolding right in front of you. Tracks A2 and B1 resonate beautifully with the ensemble of horns and strings, while B2 stands out with its peaceful yet energetically charged arrangement. Tracks B1 and B2 are covers of Coltrane's pieces.
A2: Zoot Suite
B2: India
