Jackie McLean, an American saxophonist who emerged in his teens by performing with Kenny Drew and Sonny Rollins and participating in a 1951 recording with Miles Davis, released his debut leader album, "The New Tradition," on Ad Lib in 1955. He went on to produce many masterpieces on labels such as Prestige and Blue Note. This album, released in 1960 by Prestige's New Jazz, features McLean in a quartet with Mal Waldron (piano), Arthur Phipps (bass), and Arthur Taylor (drums) on tracks A1, A3, and B1. Tracks A2, B2, and B3 feature a sextet with Curtis Fuller (trombone), Webster Young (trumpet), Gil Coggins (piano), Paul Chambers (bass), and Louis Hayes (drums). The recordings were made in 1957 in Hackensack, New Jersey, with Rudy Van Gelder as the engineer. McLean's saxophone shines with a clear tone throughout, complemented by impressive performances from Young on trumpet and Fuller on trombone. This is the reissued US edition released by Fantasy's Original Jazz Classics in 1985.
