An album released in 1984 by German pianist Joachim Kühn, who made his professional debut in the early ’60s and is known not only for his work with his brother, clarinetist Rolf Kühn, but also for his deep involvement in the avant/free-jazz scene. This is a solo acoustic piano record featuring Kühn’s own compositions. Despite his free-jazz background, there’s absolutely none of that here—in fact, the music moves well beyond the boundaries of jazz, edging into the territory of contemporary classical music. The strength of the compositions and Kühn’s masterful, highly controlled playing really shine throughout. Outstanding from start to finish. Highly recommended.
