This album, released in 1978, is by pianist Joanne Brackeen, who rose to prominence in the late 1950s through her work with Harold Land, Dexter Gordon, and others in Los Angeles. From the early 1960s, she relocated to New York and performed with many jazz greats such as Freddie McCoy, Art Blakey, Toots Thielemans, and Stan Getz. She had previously collaborated with Clint Houston on the 1976 release New True Illusion, and also contributed to Watership Down, a highly acclaimed album released exclusively in Japan in 1978, which featured Houston as well. This trio recording includes tracks laid down the previous year in a New York studio with bassist Clint Houston and Japanese guitarist Ryo Kawasaki, who had earned high praise both in Japan and internationally at the time. The album showcases avant-garde jazz and elegant contemporary jazz, with the trio’s technical interplay unfolding while maintaining a cool and sophisticated tension.
