An American tenor saxophonist who began performing on the Detroit jazz scene at the age of 18 in the 1950s, Joe Henderson rose to prominence in the 1960s after joining the groups of Dexter Gordon and Horace Silver. From there, his music evolved from hard bop toward a more adventurous, forward-looking direction, leaving behind countless landmark performances. This is Henderson’s leader album released in 1969 on Milestone Records. Backing him is a rock-solid quartet of Herbie Hancock on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Jack DeJohnette on drums, with Mike Lawrence appearing on just two tracks. Hancock’s shimmering, unsettled electric piano and DeJohnette’s deeply grooving drumming are especially striking, as the album expands the post-bop vocabulary into a richly textured jazz groove from start to finish—a true gem. This edition is a 2001 Italian reissue CD on Comet Records, featuring the same gatefold-style jacket design as the original vinyl release.
