This is a leader album recorded by American saxophonist Johnny Griffin in 1961 on Riverside Records. Griffin had been active since the mid-1940s, performing with orchestras such as Gladys Hampton and Joe Morris before releasing his debut leader work on Blue Note in 1956. The album features a unique quintet lineup with Julius Watkins (fh), Bill Lee (b), Larry Gales (b), and Ben Riley (ds). It starts off with the moody A1, transitioning from the mysterious atmosphere created by the dual bass intro into a melancholic development, setting the tone brilliantly. Track A2 delights with Watkins' French horn gracefully floating amidst the speedy tempo, while the impressive ensemble featuring the scraping sound of the double bass and a floating sensation stands out on A3. The album showcases experimental elements hinting at the dawn of post-bop, making it a remarkable piece of work. The artwork is also splendid. Released as a limited edition reissue from Victor's <Analog Meiseki-shu, Riverside Edition> series in 1993, complete with an obi and insert.
A1: Soft and Furry
