An album released in 1988 by American saxophonist Julius Hemphill, who organized the art collective Black Artists Group in St. Louis in 1968 and, along with Oliver Lake, Luther Thomas, and Hamiet Bluiett, dedicated himself to exploring avant-garde jazz. During the 1970s, he was part of New York's free jazz scene and participated in numerous sessions. This big band work features a total of 16 musicians, including John Stubblefield, J.D. Parran, John Purcell, Bill Frisell, and Jerome Harris. The arrangements, which pay homage to jazz history while taking a fresh approach, make for a delightful listen. Highlights include the urban and sensual ballad A4, track B2 featuring a poem by K Curtis Lyle, and B3, which prominently showcases Frisell's guitar.
A4: For Billie
B1: Drunk on God
