American trumpeter Lee Morgan, a prodigy who participated in numerous legendary sessions with groups led by Dizzy Gillespie, John Coltrane, and Art Blakey, left behind several classic albums, including his 1963 masterpiece The Sidewinder, before passing away in 1972 at the young age of 32. This is his first leader album, released in 1956 on Savoy. Recorded with a quintet featuring Hank Mobley (ts), Hank Jones (p), Doug Watkins (b), and Art Taylor (ds), it is astonishing to note that Morgan was only 18 years old at the time. The album showcases outstanding performances, including the fast-paced and energetic A1, an original composition by Mobley. This edition is a Japanese promotional release from 1977 by Toshiba EMI.
