A masterpiece released in 1990 on ECM by a trio consisting of Marcus Stockhausen, son of the German contemporary music maestro Karlheinz Stockhausen—who left behind the absolutely mind-blowing album Aqua Sanza with Jasper Van't Hof—his brother Simon Stockhausen, and Jo Thones. The title track, A1, features a progressive development that feels as if it pierces through a misty forest, soaring into the sky and beyond into space. Marcus Stockhausen's vibrant and expressive trumpet, Simon Stockhausen's spacey and dreamy synthesizers, and Jo Thones' wide-ranging drumming together paint a grand and otherworldly soundscape of contemporary jazz, evoking a musical utopia. Simply outstanding.
