A double album released in 1984 by American drummer Max Roach and American pianist Cecil Taylor. Roach, who had been active across a wide range of styles from the bebop era of the 1950s to ethnically inspired groups such as the percussion ensemble M’Boom, and Taylor, who, despite his background in contemporary and classical music, including influences from Bartók and Stockhausen, pursued an intensely physical mode of expression, deliver an extraordinary performance. The album features recordings from their live performance at McMillin Theatre, located within Columbia University in New York, in 1979. At the time, Roach was 55 years old, yet his drumming is astoundingly powerful. He captivates listeners with techniques that resemble a talking drum, likely played on toms to create accentuated rhythmic expressions. Taylor’s piano playing, like a torrential flood of sound, is equally overwhelming.
