Michael Smith is an American jazz pianist who released the album “Reflection on Progress” in 1972. He also worked with the Archie Shepp Quintet and the Steve Lacy Sextet. This 1978 leader album was recorded in Warsaw in 1976 and features Zbigniew Namyslowski (as,cell), Laurence Cook (as), Kent Carter (b,celllo), Claude Canille Bernard (ds ) and Jacek Benarek(b). A1 is breathtaking with 13'30"of tense interplay, B1 grooves with austere restraint. The cello, saxophone and piano in unison create a profound illusion, while the ethno-jazz B2 with its oriental melody is quite deep and spiritual.

A2: Time II (Geomusic 3.700)
B2: Impressions on Chinese Prints
