A 1978 masterpiece leader album by Michel Herr, Belgium’s foremost lyrical pianist, well known for his outstanding collaborations with German saxophonist Wolfgang Engstfeld. Here he leads a trio with Freddie Deronde (b) and Felix Simtaine (ds), both of whom also appeared on Paolo Radoni’s 1978 classic Vento. While the fast-paced post-bop numbers are excellent, Herr’s brilliance on piano shines most in the medium-tempo pieces, where his lyrical depth comes through even more strongly. Especially A2 and B2, delicate and flowing melodies are deeply moving. Deronde’s bass and Simtaine’s drums provide superb playing throughout, and the avant-garde interplay among the trio on B3 is simply outstanding. Highly, highly recommended. Original Belgian pressing. Although released three times in the same year, this particular version is the one with the group name printed in large font on the label.

A1: Ouverture Eclair
A2: The Sound of Gold
B2: Peacefully
B3: End to End
