A memorial album released in 1979 by Mingus Dynasty, a supergroup formed shortly after Charles Mingus passed away in January 1979. The lineup includes John Handy (alto sax), Joe Farrell (tenor sax), Jimmy Owens (trumpet, flugelhorn), Jimmy Knepper (trombone), Don Pullen (piano), Charlie Haden (bass), and Danny Richmond (drums). The group performs six carefully selected pieces from Mingus’s vast catalog of compositions, and the performances—befitting the caliber of these musicians and the era—are highly refined. In particular, the sensual groove of the slower numbers strikingly captures the essence of Mingus's style. It's truly outstanding.
